Our First Meeting!

Our very first meeting of the Overwhelming Emotions Support Group was Tuesday April 13th. Seven people were in attendance. Everyone signed in with their names, email addresses and phone numbers. Group members brainstormed a “comfort agreement” or set set guidelines to ensure that all members felt safe to share their feelings and thoughts about living with overwhelming emotions. Gradually the group developed a list including:

  • Confidentiality  – What is said in the room stays in the room
  • Respect for diversity and difference of opinion
  • Be Non-judgmental
  • Not giving advice
  • Be gentle and supportive with each other
  • Avoid side talk
  • Participation is voluntary

Next the group did a check-in. This consisted of each group member saying their name and sharing any other information about themselves or topics they would like to discuss. Of course, the content of these discussion is confidential so it will not be posted here. However, themes included communicating with friends and family with BPD and dealing with stigma.

Finally, near the end of the night, Deborah who is one of our Moms served up glutton-free muffins (which were a hit!), coffee, tea  and cookies.  Members enjoyed comparing stories and socializing with one another. In fact, much of the sharing took place over the food!

The next meeting is April 27, 7 pm Begbie Hall Room 151.
